Home Sweet Holland

I’m back! After spending the last four months in Africa, working and travelling, I am back in the Netherlands since yesterday. And boy does it feel good to be home. Because, even if I’m not from here, and even if I have only been here for a short while, I truly feel like I’ve come home.  And what a wonderful homecoming, to Holland at its summertime best, to the city of Utrecht blooming in all its sunny glory!

In my short time away, in such drastically different milieux, I managed to forget about all the little joys of Dutch life that I relish – afternoon teas in quaint cafés, cutely decorated (curtain-less) windows, bustling canal-side restaurants and bars, entire families on bicycles… I will continue the list as I rediscover everything anew in the coming weeks.

Well, it’s time to finish unpacking and settling in, I just wanted to let you know that What the Dutch has come back to life after its long spring hibernation.

About Home Strange Home

I first left the US in 1999, when I was 18 years old. Since then, I’ve spent 13 years living abroad - 3 in Canada, 7 in Europe, and 3 in Africa. Now I've finally returned to the US on a one-way plane ticket. I arrived home in late January 2014 and set foot in the US for the first time in nearly 2.5 years. In Home Strange Home, I blog about the ups and downs of my re-acculturation experience.
